Create, Curate, Capture: On the image-making process

The renowned American photographer Ansel Adams beautifully captures the essence of image creation – “You don’t take a photograph, you make it.” Within the photographic studio, this work ethic is particularly fitting; in order to create a successful range of product photographs, curation, preparation and attention to detail are key.

Since the start of the year I’ve had the opportunity to create, curate and capture images of products, including cosmetics and luxury scarves. Each shoot required a unique approach to image making, whether that be setting up flat lay photos, or hanging products from the studio’s ceiling. Careful selection of the background colour, light quality and focal length transformed the images from standard product shots, to ones with a sublime artistic feel.
